SA appoints arbitrator in mine law case - report

The South African government had appointed Paris-based law firm Freshfields Bruchhaus Deringer to represent it in an international arbitration case, Johannesburg-based newspaper Business Report said on Tuesday, citing Webber Wentzel Bowens mining lawyer Peter Leon. Leon is acting for Italian investors in Marlin Holdings Limited and Marlin Corporation Limited and Red Graniti SA (Pty) Limited, whose request for compulsory international arbitration against the South African government was granted by the World Bank's International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington. The companies say that South Africa’s mining law contravenes bilateral treaties signed by the government and are sueing the South African government for losses and damages worth €266-million.

Georgia, Tbilisi / corr Trend N.Kirtzkhalia / Peaceful solutions to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict have not yet been exhausted. Sheik-ul-Islam Haji Allahshukur Pashazade, the Head of the Caucasus Muslims Board, made this statement in Tbilisi on 20 April in a joint a news conference with the Catholic Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II.

In reply to the question by Trend Correspondent in Tbilisi, Sheik-ul-Islam stated that numerous meetings held with the religious leader of Armenia through mediation of the Catholics-Patriarch yielded no results.

Despite the achievement of an agreement on exchange of POWs, Armenia still has not fulfilled its obligations he stressed.

Pashazade noted that two Armenian POWs were released at his initiative, while the Armenian religious leaders did not make a reply step.

Kony peace talks face triple challenge

Peace talks to end one of Africas longest wars, thought to have collapsed in January 2007, arent over yet. After two months of uncertainty, the parties the Ugandan government and the Lords Resistance Army (LRA ) agreed in principle to meet and resume negotiations. The pace quickened last week with two sets of informal talks. In Kenya, the two sides reportedly reached broad agreement on extending the landmark (and now expired) truce of August 2006; and in Ri-Kwangba camp in southern Sudan on 13-14 April, United Nations envoy met the LRAs elusive leader and Ugandas interior minister and top negotiator, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.

Chissano, a former president of Mozambique, added his voice to the latest calls for an extension of the truce. It is my hope we will not leave this place without signing the documents which suspend hostilities, Reuters quoted Chissano as saying after he watched Kony and Rugunda shake hands.
